Don’t Sell the Solution—Sell the Possibility
I often say that sales and confidence are synonymous. It takes confidence to sell an idea, product, or solution—and confidence to help someone else believe change is possible.
Years ago, I heard someone dismiss personal and professional development as a little too "woo-woo." It made me smile because WOO—Winning Others Over—is actually one of my top CliftonStrengths.
But winning others over isn't about being charismatic, pushy, or convincing someone to buy.
To me, WOO is helping someone see a future they may not yet see for themselves.
In direct sales, I wasn't simply selling technology. I learned to help healthcare executives envision a future with greater patient and nursing safety. Today, whether I'm working with a sales leader, salesperson, or organization, I'm still doing the same thing: helping people see what's possible and building their confidence to move toward it.
5 Ways to Strengthen Your WOO
1. Make it about them.
Understand their goals, challenges, and aspirations before discussing your solution.
2. Listen with curiosity.
Great influence begins with great questions—not great presentations.
3. Paint the future state.
Help people visualize what could be different and why that change matters.
4. Build trust before influence.
Authenticity, empathy, and consistency create credibility.
5. Create a win-win.
True influence isn't manipulation. The best outcomes create value for everyone.
The WOO Traps
We lose influence when we talk too much, lead with our product, push before establishing trust, make assumptions instead of asking questions, or focus on what we want rather than what the other person needs.
Winning others over isn't something you're simply born with. Like sales confidence, it can be developed.
So don't focus on convincing someone to buy.
Help them believe in what's possible.
When people trust you—and trust the future you're helping them see—you don't have to push them forward.
They want to move forward with you.
