Years ago, I sat across from my largest client with my Director of Sales. The contracts were signed, implementation was underway—and the customer was unhappy.
They threatened to hold future purchases unless we resolved the service and performance issues.
I waited for my director to respond.
Silence.
The tension was intense.
Then something unexpected happened: the customer softened. They apologized for the intensity of the conversation and agreed to work with us toward a solution. We eventually resolved the issues—and the remaining orders followed.
That experience taught me something I still believe today:
In negotiation, we often lose power by using too many words, reacting emotionally, or conceding too quickly.
As Og Mandino wrote:
"Today I will be master of my emotions."
That may be one of the most important negotiation habits we can develop.
1. Focus on value, not price.
Keep the conversation centered on outcomes, impact, and ROI.
2. Never give without getting.
If you make a concession, receive something meaningful in return.
3. Use silence.
You do not have to immediately fill uncomfortable space. Silence can create clarity and reveal information.
4. Know your boundaries.
Decide in advance what you can negotiate—and what you cannot.
5. Slow down.
You can always say, “I need to review that before I commit.” Time protects you from emotional decisions.
6. Create elegant negotiables.
Look for value-adds that matter to the customer without automatically reducing price—timing, access, resources, support, or flexibility.
The biggest negotiation mistakes? Failing to prepare, negotiating from fear, discounting too early, talking too much, and giving away value without receiving commitment.
Great negotiation isn’t about defeating the other side.
It’s about maintaining your confidence, protecting your value, and creating an outcome where both parties want to move forward.
Know your power. Own your value. And stay master of your emotions.
