Early in my sales career, I learned that a healthy pipeline needs four criteria: quality, quantity, balance, and velocity.
Unfortunately, I learned this lesson the hard way.
My pipeline was thin, and one single opportunity stood between me and my quota. The problem? The customer was extremely difficult—negative, resistant to change, and challenging to work with.
But I needed the sale.
And when we need one particular customer, we give away our power. We might appear desperate, and sometimes we may lower our standards.
Today, as a business owner, I think differently about the first Q: Quality. I don't just ask, Can they buy? I ask, Are they someone I want to work with? Similar to a personal relationship, how someone shows up in the early stages most likely how they will show up in the later stages in the relationship!
This event and others forced me to get clear about my T.I.P. 'template of an ideal prospect.' My dream clients share what I call the Three P's:
POSITIVE: They're collaborative, coachable, flexible, and willing to work together to solve problems. They have the ability to lighten up and when things go wrong, they do not blame, or project negativity onto me.
PROGRESSIVE: They're open to new ideas and willing to invest in solutions that can take their organization to the next level. They are risk-takers and trust me as an advisor, and know that in order to grow, they need to innovate and adopt new processes, solutions, and products.
PRODUCTIVE: They keep commitments, value everyone's time, and consistently follow through with words and actions. They appreciate structure, process, and also are willing to do their part in the buying journey.
We confuse interest with qualification. A prospect responding to us doesn't make them qualified. If they are not part of our target market or niche, we may not be qualified to help them.
We qualify only for money. Budget matters, but so do fit, urgency, commitment, and willingness to change. If we are unfamiliar with their industry, problems, or business, sometimes it is best to walk away or refer them to someone else who can help.
We ignore red flags because we need the sale. Desperation can turn a poor-fit prospect into what looks like a great opportunity. Learn to trust and follow your intuition and gut instincts about others, it can save you a lot of time and stress (speaking from experience)!
We don't qualify throughout the buying journey. Qualification isn't a one-time event. It can take multiple touch points to know if a person, business, or organization is the right fit for us. Do not be afraid to let the other party know that there is not a mutual fit - sooner than later.
We don't walk away. Sometimes the best sales decision is deciding not to pursue the business. Feeling resistance during the sales process is a clear indication that this will end up being the customer that ends up taking all your time, energy, and your time is better spent finding a high quality client.
The solution? Build enough quantity, quality, balance, and velocity into your pipeline that no single opportunity controls your success.
Define your dream client before you're desperate for one.
Because sales acceleration isn't about winning every customer.
It's about winning the right customers.
