If you've been in sales or business development for any length of time, you've probably experienced what I call being stuck.
I know I have.
When I look back on the times I struggled the most, it wasn't because I lacked talent or opportunity. It was because I became trapped in my own thinking. I blamed circumstances, avoided accountability, focused on what wasn't working, and allowed negative emotions to consume my energy. I questioned myself.
The good news? Being stuck is temporary—if you're willing to change your approach.
1. We blame instead of taking ownership.
Blame gives away our power. It makes us become a victim. Accountability gives it back.
2. We dwell on negative emotions.
Fear, frustration, resentment, and disappointment cloud our judgment and slow our execution. Nothing grows or advances when we have a negative attitude.
3. We overthink instead of taking action.
Analysis without action creates paralysis. We get stuck in our head and become paralyzed vs. taking action.
4. We lose sight of our purpose.
When quotas become more important than serving customers, motivation fades. Our customers feel this and think we are 'trying to make a sale,' vs serving them.
5. We become comfortable.
Growth begins where comfort ends. Staying safe often means staying stuck. We forget to take risks.
1. Be accountable.
Ask yourself,"What is my role in creating this result?" and 'What result can I create today?'
2. Focus on what you can control.
Your attitude, preparation, activity, and follow-up are always within your control. Consistency is the key to success and adds up to big results.
3. Take the next small step.
Momentum isn't created by giant leaps—it's built one conversation, one prospect, and one decision at a time. Activity equals results.
4. Seek support.
The fastest way to move forward is to learn from someone who's already been where you want to go. Hiring a sales coach, guide, or mentor is the most valuable yet most overlooked way to get momentum.
5. Practice gratitude.
Gratitude shifts your focus from what's missing to what's possible. Appreciate small wins, daily success. Success leaves clues.
Being stuck isn't a permanent destination—it's simply a signal that something needs to change.
The most successful sales professionals aren't those who never get stuck. They're the ones who recognize it quickly, take ownership, and keep moving forward.
Success isn't the absence of obstacles. It's the decision to break through them.
