Have you ever wanted to reach a goal, change a habit, or achieve something and said, 'someday I'll... I once heard my friend Jerry, a great speaker and friend, give a speech and say, 'someday isle leads to a place called nowhere - a place where none of us want to end up!' I never thought of myself as a procrastinator, until I got into sales...
The stakes were high much of my sales career. My sales quota was typically in the $3+ million dollar range each year when I was in medical sales. The focus was constantly on making a monthly, quarterly, and annual quota. There were weekly calls to discuss our strategy to hit our sales objectives. Most often, it was a matter of consistency, critical thinking, and getting way outside of my comfort zone to ask for big commitments from customers. Without the proper discovery or knowing the customers 'why now' I hadn't earned the right to ask for a partnership.
One phrase that I still remember hearing from the director of sales that began to help me stop procrastinating and asking for commitments was 'time kills all deals!' It made sense - according to sales research and the book 'The Challenger Sale,' the longer a sales opportunity drags, the more likely it will end in indecision. Adding to the mix: too many stakeholders, not having a clearly defined need from the customer, different agendas, too many options...urgency becomes secondary, and focus gets lost. I think these words from Og Mandino summarize it all:
My dreams are worthless, my plans are dust, my goals are impossible. All are of no value unless they are followed by action.
I will act now.
Keys to annihilating procrastination:
Take 2 mm steps each day towards your goal
Never leave a customer or prospect interaction without scheduling the next meeting, call or appointment - 'maybe' or 'not right now' can become YES
Reward and celebrate the small wins - sometimes getting an appointment or getting a 'thank you' from a tough customer is a win!
Always seek to understand the 'WIIIFM' or the personal Why Now of the buyer
Self-confidence and self-esteem rises when we take action!
The more NOs you get the closer you are to a YES!
There is no substitute for attitude, action, and accountability!
