Confidence

The Secret Ingredient to Sales Success

June 29, 20254 min read

When I was a teenager, my mom gave me a book by Tony Robbins, 'Awaken the Giant Within.' It was signed to my mom by Tony after he spoke locally in St. Louis, starting his motivational speaking and career in the 70's. After reading the book, I came to realize that we have the potential to be exactly who we want to be - it is only our stories, negative thoughts, and self-defeating beliefs that hold us back. Later when I was in my sales career, I felt a a calling to see Tony live, and I made it happen in 2008, in Orlando, Florida. That was where I began to see a vision for myself of becoming a coach, teacher, and inspirer of sales and self confidence.

I discovered that self-confidence is the foundation upon which sales confidence is built. It's the belief in one's abilities that fuels the drive to succeed in sales. My journey initially helped me conquer my limiting beliefs, stories, and living in the past - my lack of self-confidence. The 'aha' is that self confidence is the fuel to sales confidence. This transformation propelled me to transformed me to become a top sales performer, sales trainer, and eventually start my own business to help leaders and teams achieve similar success. As I reflect back, I will share my:

6 Tips to Accelerate Sales Confidence:

1. Know Your Product Inside Out and Your Competitions Products/Offerings: Understanding every detail about your product or service allows you to speak with authority and answer any questions with confidence. Understand what your competition offers, as well as what they are missing, so you can meet the needs of your prospects and customers by being different than the competition.

2. Practice Being in the Now, Being Present, Active Listening: Engage with your clients by truly listening to their needs and concerns. This builds trust and shows that you value their input. Prepare a brief agenda for meeting, and stick to it. 'Winging it,' can waste time, and send a message of sloppiness to your prospect - not what we want!

3. Embrace Loss and Rejection as a Learnable Moments: View rejection as an opportunity to learn and improve rather than a setback. Analyze what went wrong and adjust your approach accordingly. Do not be afraid to follow up after a 'no.' I have followed up and sometimes misinformation or answering more questions or objection has taken me from a 'no' to 'yes,' and it can for you, too.

4. Set Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Achievable Goals: Set 3 goals for your day; on Sunday, set 5 goals for the week. At the start of each month, reflect and set the goals for the next 30 days. I keep a daily journal where I write everything down that I just listed. I review it every morning. Correct and continue if you are off track with your goals. Daily 2mm steps will lead to achieving these goals-which will boost your confidence and motivate you to reach higher targets.

5. Be Accountable for Your Results: Seek Feedback and Mentorship: "I am responsible for my results" is a mantra I live by and teach other business leaders and teams. Break the habit of blaming others, circumstances, the economy, the government, the weather, etc. for missing your goals. "If it is to be, it is up to me" is a truth to live by. Regular feedback from peers or mentors can provide valuable insights and help you refine your sales techniques.

6. Invest in Yourself, Your Skills, and Personal Development: The best investment you will ever make is in yourself, your business, and your personal/professional growth . Continuous learning through seminars, workshops, books, podcasts, influencers, or courses can enhance your skills and boost your confidence. I listen to 1-2 books a month on Audible. I believe learners are earners.

Common Mistakes in Self-Confidence:

- Comparing Yourself to Others: This can erode your self-esteem. Focus on your unique strengths and progress, and what makes you unique from everyone else. We all have a 'natural genius.' What is yours? You can take the free Habit Finder Assessment to see where you stand in 6 Success Habits.

- Fear of Failure: Letting fear hold you back can prevent you from taking necessary risks. Make it a habit to act in spite of fear. 'Forget Everything and Rise' is the way I define FEAR! Embrace failure as a stepping stone to success.

- Neglecting Self-Care: Like a car, we cannot run on empty. Give your work hours 100% and your evening, weekends, and 'me time' 100%. Overworking without taking care of your physical and mental health can lead to burnout, affecting your confidence.

- Conditional Thinking: 'I will feel better about myself when....' Putting self confidence as a condition is destructive. Instead, choose to be confident now and act on your goals with confidence, instead of future based happiness.

By focusing on building self-confidence, you can unlock your full potential in sales and beyond. Remember, confidence is contagious and can inspire those around you to elevate their performance as well.
